Find out about our corporate social responsibility and sponsorship initiatives throughout the island of Ireland.
At EirGrid, we are committed to carrying out our business in a responsible way. Our CSR engagement is multifaceted and covers a wide range of events, issues and activities: from work with our chosen charities and volunteering by our staff to making sure that our activities help protect the environment.
As a testament to this commitment, we are proud to have achieved recertification of the Business Working Responsibly (BWR) Mark in November 2016. The Business Working Responsibly Mark is an independent verification of our dedication to being a responsible business.
We have held the BWR Mark continuously since we first achieved it in 2012. The Business Working Responsibly Mark was developed by Business in the Community Ireland, audited by the National Standards Authority of Ireland, and is based in ISO26000 which offers guidance on socially responsible behaviour.
We sponsor a number of organisations and groups across the island of Ireland. You can find a full list of all 2015 sponsorships here.
We have a responsibility to ensure we carry out our work within the marketplace in an efficient, sustainable way. Our dedicated customer relations team aim to deliver quality to the customers and stakeholders that we serve. They respond to a wide range of needs across the wholesale energy sector and throughout the island of Ireland. They also serve the suppliers and stakeholders with an interest in the transmission grid. Our team survey customers regular to ensure we understand their needs and can identify opportunities for improving our service.
As well as serving our customers as best we can, we work to ensure that procurement of all goods and services provides best value for money. We evaluate potential suppliers to ensure they conduct their business in a socially responsible manner when it comes to the environment, employment and health and safety.
We firmly believe we are only as good as our people. We recognise our people are our greatest asset. We seek to develop and challenge our people to be the best that they can be and true to their abilities. We promote partnership, teamwork and respect. We work to achieve this through employee engagement and consultation, training and development, equality, teamwork and respect.
We take into account the environmental effects of our work both directly in our offices and in our operation of the power system and market. In our Dublin and Belfast offices, energy usage is continually monitored and we use energy efficient appliances and processes. We have implemented the ISO14001 Environmental Management System Standard to make sure we continue to identify how we impact on the environment and how we can improve in this regard. Through smart grid initiatives such as the Delivering a Secure, Sustainable Electricity System - DS3 programme, our continued focus on the integration of renewables onto the system, and attainment of the 40% renewable target by 2020, we hope to contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
We continually engage with those communities throughout the island where our transmission projects are planned and being developed. Our staff actively volunteer and fundraise for charity and worthwhile causes. We are involved in initiatives across the island, educating kids on subjects such as electricity and the real-life application of STEM subjects. See below for a list of current CSR initiatives taking place throughout the island.
