General Outage Information

Generation Outages

EirGrid and SONI develop and implement a Generation Outage Plan. This ensures co-ordination of  “planned outages”, when power stations will not be available due to maintenance or other reasons.

The Generation Outage Plan takes into account security of supply in Ireland and Northern Ireland, as well as economic operation of the power systems, and the maintenance/resource needs of generators.

For more information on Generation Outage planning or requesting a Generator Outage, please go to Generation Outages. This page also contains the latest outage documents and guidelines.

Transmission Outages

The System Integrity team in EirGrid puts together a Transmission Outage Programme and manages transmission outages. This involves planned times when transmission infrastructure (lines, cables and substations etc.) will be out of service for maintenance. It also involves times when testing, connection of new plant and decommissioning of old plant is carried out.

Transmission maintenance takes place in line with the EirGrid Asset Maintenance Policy to ensure that the transmission system can operate in a safe, secure and reliable manner. A Guide to Transmission Equipment Maintenance is available here.

A high level description of the transmission outage planning process is available here.

For more information on transmission outage planning or requesting a transmission customer outage, visit the transmission outages page.

EirGrid and ESBN have published a consultation paper located here.

Transmission Outage Requests

Transmission connected customers can submit Transmission Outage requests to EirGrid using the Transmission Outage Request Form.

All outages must be submitted at least three weeks ahead of the planned outage. This will ensure a sufficient notice period is provided for relevant studies to be conducted by EirGrid System Operations and for ESBN to assign the required Network Technician resources. Ideally, all outage requests should be submitted as far in advance as possible, to ensure works can be scheduled onto the Transmission Outage Programme.

Any works requiring an EI, must be submitted to EirGrid System Operations no later than five weeks in advance of the planned outage, to allow for preparation and due diligence of relevant documentation.

Outturn Availability

The Single Electricity Market Committee (SEMC) decision SEM-15-071 "Process for the Calculation of Outturn Availability" was published on 29 September 2015.

For information relating to the process for the calculation of outturn availability, please see The EirGrid and SONI Implementation Approach to the SEM Committee Decision Paper SEM-15-071.

The Ireland Ex-Post Outturn Availability Connection Asset Annual Maintenance Report for the 2022 outage season, as approved by the Regulatory Authorities, is published here.

The Ireland Ex-Ante Outturn Availability Connection Asset Annual Maintenance Plan for the current outage season, as approved by the Regulatory Authorities, is published here.

Generator Outage Publication

In addition to the annual All-Island Outage Plan updated monthly, a weekly All-Island Outage Plan covering the next 16 weeks is published here. The report consists of two worksheets; the first sheet shows the outages graphically at a daily level and the second worksheet shows the start and finish times and dates of the outages. Outages are represented with an abbreviation in the files - “S” represents a Scheduled Outage and “F” represents a Forced Outage.
