EirGrid proposed a new 220/110 kV electrical substation for this project, which is now complete.

EirGrid proposed a new 220/110 kV electrical substation for this project, which is now complete.  The new 220/110 kV substation connected to an existing 220 kV transmission line. This line runs from Tarbert, Co. Kerry to Clashavoon, Co. Cork.  We also needed two new 110 kv lines to connect the proposed new 220/110 kV substation to the existing Garrow 110 kV substation.

Why is this project needed?

EirGrid plans projects like this so every part of our network meets the required standard: A safe and secure electricity system. This development was necessary to resolve transmission network problems in the South West.

We were also responding to a significant amount of proposed renewable generation in the South West. The existing 110 kV transmission network will not be able to accommodate the amount of wind generation planned for the area. The new 220/110 kV substation will also allow the region to utilise its rich renewable energy resources.

It's important to note that EirGrid has a legal obligation to connect those who generate electricity. As the national electricity transmission system operator for Ireland, we have a statutory function. Subject to direction from the regulator, this statute requires us to offer a connection to the grid for those who request it. When an electricity generator accepts our connection offer, we have to meet their needs. This means we are legally required to develop the grid in response to plans for new electricity generation, such as wind farms.

What are the benefits of this project?

This project will support growth and development in the region and ensure security of supply for the future. A strong electricity network will help existing industry in the South West. Particularly when competing for business and inward development to the region.

The new connection will also allow the area to utilise its rich renewable energy resources. The development of the renewable energy sector is an important element in driving future job creation. It is also a key step to meet mandatory EU targets that will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
