EirGrid has embarked on a series of citizens roadshow events aimed at informing local communities on how the organisation plans to future-proof the electricity grid as well as providing information about microgeneration, home energy upgrades and retrofitting grants, and regional development issues.
The roadshows follow on from the Shaping Our Electricity Future consultation programme during which EirGrid sought views and inputs from all sectors of society and industry about grid development.
The EirGrid Energy Citizens Roadshow took place in the Salthill Hotel in Galway on 13 September.

The EirGrid Energy Citizens Roadshow took place in the Tower Hotel in Waterford on the 22nd of June. Those present heard details of EirGrid’s future plans for the electricity grid on the south coast, including the delivery of offshore electricity substations which will connect energy from future offshore renewable energy resources to the onshore grid.
Waterford City and County Council Climate Action Coordinator Gráinne Kennedy shared details of the county climate action plan, and the key role of energy in this. Gerry Noone from ESB Networks spoke on their ‘National Networks Local Connections’ programme, sharing tips with the audience on how to make the most of their smart meters.
Yvonne Byrne from SEAI spoke of the activities of 21 Sustainable Energy Communities across Waterford who are focused on improving energy efficiency and sustainable transport options in their areas.
The EirGrid Energy Citizens Roadshow took place in the Carrigaline Court Hotel in Cork on the 21st of June. Those present heard details of EirGrid’s future plans for the electricity grid on the south coast, including the delivery of offshore electricity substations which will connect energy from future offshore renewable energy resources to the onshore grid.
Attendees also heard from a range of panellists such as ESB Networks and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland on supports for energy efficiency upgrades across a range of areas including retrofitting grants and solar panel installation.
The EirGrid Energy Citizens Roadshow took place in the Great National Hotel, Ballina on the 24th of May. EirGrid’s Derek Carroll outlined plans to prepare Ireland’s electricity grid to carry 17GW (gigawatts) more renewable electricity by 2030, triple 2020 levels. SEAI Sustainable Energy Community Mentor Dr Orla Nic Suibhne outlined the need for homes to be more energy efficient, while Gerry Noone from ESB Networks told the audience that with 1.3 million smart meters installed across the country to date, consumers will be able to make more informed choices about their consumption. Laura Dixon, Climate Action Coordinator at Mayo County Council, shared that Mayo has been allocated €609,000 for direct climate action projects. The event concluded with a questions and answers session.

The EirGrid Energy Citizens Roadshows took place in Kildare on the 1st and 2nd of February 2023. The Roadshows took place in Naas and Maynooth and featured a number of exhibitors providing information on energy and community supports followed by a panel discussion from EirGrid, SEAI, ESB Networks and County Kildare Chamber.
